JOHN MOORE & SONS of Clerkenwell

This superb clock was made by the renowned company of John Moore and Sons of Clerkenwell in about 1830. This company is recorded in Britten’s “Old Clocks & Watches” as located in 38 Clerkenwell Close between 1801 and 1875. The company was best known for making high quality turret clocks for churches and public buildings, but also made a small number of bracket clocks for the domestic market. This superb example of their work is housed in a rather unusual mahogany case with applied carvings to the front. The beautifully engraved silvered brass dial is fitted with a strike/silent indicator and is engraved with the company’s name, and the number 12385. The massive 7 pillar 3 train chain fusee movement strikes the hours on a single bell, and chimes the quarters on a nest of 8 bells. The movement is in superb condition, having been recently expertly overhauled and serviced.
