HENRY MARTIN of WORPLESDON

A superb quality oak cased 8 day longcase clock c1765-1770

 

 

A high quality 5 pillar 8 day movement with many idiosyncratic refinements, inset calendar dial, secondary minute dial, finely engraved dial centre and makers name on silvered boss within an excellent high quality and well proportioned oak case.  The case having original caddy top, side windows and walnut blind fretting to hood.  The original lock, hinges, escutcheon and winder add to the distinctive appeal of this superb clock.  We have included some close up photographs of the movement to show the superb workmanship of thsi clockmaker and to display the quality.

 

Henry Martin was noted in Worplesdon, Surry in 1777 when it was reported in The General Evening Post (London) of the sale by auction of his property near Wood-street Common in Worplesdon.

Guildford, Surry, on Saturday the 11th day of January 1777, at Two o'Clock in the Afternoon, according to Conditions of Sale which will be then produced.

A FREEHOLD ESTATE, lying near Wood-street Common, in the parishes of Worplesdon and Ash, SURREY; consisting of a good farm house, two barns, a stable, and other convenient out-buildings, all in good repair; a large orchard well planted with fruit trees, about 44 acres of good arable and meadow land, with a considerable quantity of young timber growing thereon; hath an extensive right of common, and a right to cut three loads of peat in every year from Mr. Woodroffe's moors, paying only the cutting. The premisses are in the possession of Mr. Henry Martin, who will shew the same.
