This particular clock is numbered on the dial and backplate with no. 874.  The arched silvered brass dial has a simple yet elegant engraved face with subsidiary dial to adjust the movement speed. The case is walnut with some delightfully well executed carved decoration and sound frets on the sides, top and rear door.  It strikes on 2 gongs.

This fine mahogany bracket clock dates from about 1780, and has its original verge escapement, and strikes the hours and half hours on a single bell.

An interesting

example of the work

of this maker with a

very attractive

painted dial, 8 day

movement with

pinwheel striking

and housed within a

relatively simple oak

case.

Porthouse was one of Cumbria's most eminent clockmakers.  This attractive 30 hour clock is in a well executed carved oak case that we consider is probably original.
