THOMAS READ of MANCHESTER

(1770-1804)

Thomas Read is noted in both Bailie’s Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World and Britten’s Old Clocks and Watches and their makers. 1770-1804 as a clockmaker in Manchester.

 

This is a fine example of a Manchester 8 day longcase clock with a finely painted dial featuring floral corner decoration, secondary second dial and inset calendar dial with twin globes beneath the moon dial of pastoral scene and two ships in a stormy seascape. The fine mahogany case has a broken arch swan neck pediment with central globe finial, reeded pillars to both hood and trunk and delicate inlays to the trunk and case.
