JOHN SWINBURNE of HEXHAM c1740 1712-1748 John Swinburne (1712-1748) was born in Dilston and was later noted as clockmaker at nearby Hexham. He described himself as Clockmaker to the Earl of Derwentshire who lost his landownings in 1731 after supporting the Jacobite rebellion. John Swinburne was noted in September 1745 in a list of reputed papists and non-jurors. In 1730 he married Jane Smith of Bywell St. Andrew. This fine example of his work is housed in a red walnut case with geometric star inlays of boxwood and bog oak. The superb dial has gilt brass spandrels, and a fine rocking ship automaton in the arch. The movement is of exceptionally high quality, and in excellent condition.
