THOMAS RADFORD of LEEDS c1760 1731-1801 Thomas Radford was born in 1731 and was a talented craftsman who, along with being an experienced clockmaker, was also a watchmaker, cutler, silversmith and jeweller. He was apprenticed in 1731 to the famous Yorkshire maker, Dollif Rollison and finally set up in Leeds in his own right in 1753. He continued trading in Leeds until his death in 1801. He had 2 sons, Thomas (1761-1793) and William (1764-1826) who continued the business until his own death in 1826. This excellent example of his work is of 8 day duration from around 1760 has an engraved brass dial with moonroller dial featuring a beautifully depicted sailing ship and moon. The dial has an inset calendar wheel and subsidiary second dial. The nicely figured and elegant mahogany case has a broken arch top, brass capitals, centre globe finial and canted corners to the trunk. He is featured in Clockmakers of Northern England by Brian Loomes where there is another example of a moonroller by this clockmaker.
