THOMAS OGDEN of HALIFAX c1730

(b.1692-d.1769)

Thomas Ogden was born in 1693, and was the most famous of an extensive family of Quaker clockmakers in Yorkshire. He was one of the finest provincial clockmakers of the 18th century, and there is evidence that he made at least one movement for the great George Graham of London. His work is always of the highest quality, and shows many distinctive features, which can be seen in this fine early example of his work, such as the applied brass beaded border around the dial, the finely worked steel hands, the tulip shaped angle-joint on the crutch, the swan-necked shaped backcock, the arched movement plates, 5 ringed pillars, and many finely worked and idiosyncratic decorative features on the movement’s steelwork.

This clock has Ogden’s own system of internal countwheel striking, and the hour hand is fitted with a moveable collet to aid hand setting.

The well carved oak case is undoubtedly original to the clock, and the carving is quite likely to be original, as carved cases were very popular in the Halifax area at this time.
