SWEDISH MORA CLOCK c1820

By definition a Mora clock is one connected with the area around Mora in the Dalarna Province of Sweden.  This is a particularly attractive and elegantly cased clock showing the rococo style imported from France which influenced the local clock makers. Along with the sheet iron dial and painted numbers this clock can be dated to around the early 1800s.  The case still has an attractively distressed and aged blue painted finish that identifies this distinctive style of clock.

The clocks were made as a co-operative venture by the local peasants and farmers who used this enterprise to supplement the sparse income that could be produced from the barren lands during the winter months.  The movement and dial were often sold independently of the case which was then ordered locally from a cabinet maker leading to the variety of shapes and sizes available.

The clock has an eight day movement and strikes the hour on two bells on a ting tang strike.  The weights are cast iron.
