THOMAS BIRCHALL of NANTWICH (1725-1784)

Thomas Birchall is noted as a well known local clockmaker in Nantwich from 1750 until 1784.  One of his clocks is on display in Nantwich Museum and displays very similar characteristics as this clock. Of particular note is this makers use of a cormorant style bird on the dial.  In this particular instance it is engraved onto a plaque in the dial arch but on later painted dial clocks the bird is made part of the painted decoration.

The 8 day rack striking movement is of high quality and has been professional overhauled and re-strung with natural gut. The brass dial has the original hands and features the engraved plaque in the arch with inset calendar wheel and secondary second dial.  The case is of particular note and is a very fine oak case with contrasting mahogany edging, fluted columns on the hood and trunk, brass capitals, inlaid ebony and boxwood motifs on the trunk door and hood with conch shell marquetry on the base and herringbone inlay around the trunk.

Height 89.5"/225 cm
